Febuxostat: Potential new treatment for Gout
HealthDay News has reported that a new drug called febuxostat may end Gout flares faster than Allopurinol, according to researchers.
This study, which was presented at last month’s annual meeting of the American College of Rheumatology, compared different doses of the drug Febuxostat versus treatment with either a placebo or Allopurinol, one of the two current standard gout treatments (the other being Colchicine). Patients not in the control groups received daily doses of 80mg, 120mg or 240 mg of Febuxostat for 28 weeks. Their outcomes were compared to those of patients who received either a placebo, or 100mg to 300 mg of Allopurinol.
By the end of the study, close to 70 percent of the patients taking 240 milligrams per day of Febuxostat had uric acid levels less than 6 mg per deciliter, compared with 65 percent of those taking 120 mg per day; 48 percent of those taking 80 mg per day; 22 percent of patients taking Allopurinol and none of the patients taking the placebo.
“The study is very encouraging because it shows that febuxostat was superior at lowering serum uric acid levels compared to allopurinol, the current standard of treatment,” said lead researcher Dr. Robert Wortmann of the U of Oklahoma Med school.
These findings confirm similar findings about Febuxostat’s efficacy in lowering serum acid levels in gout patients which were outlined in a study presented at the American College of Rheumatology meeting last year.

I have had problems with gout for several years. Black cherry juice, black cherry supplements from the health store, allopurinol (300 mg) and water seem to have the best effect over all.
I have discoverd that red wine and red meat can trigger an attack
over night. Beer can also cause an attack with continued daily use
of say three pints.

Hi Gerry,
I’m glad you’ve found a Gout control regimen that works for you. Everyone is different in terms of their best course of treatment. As it turns out, Febuxostat may not give any added benefit over meds that are currently available.
Like you, I take Allopurinol and that does a fairly good job of keeping my Gout in check, except when I miss doses.
Thanks for commenting!

I am very excited to try this new drug. Yes, I am a woman and have had severe gout for 30 years. I cannot tolerate Allupurinal. So I have more and more problems from gout - now the bones are thickening around nerves and apparently it is all from gout. So if there is one pill I could take daily that would stop some of this, I would be thrilled.

Nancy, has your doctor tried you on Colchicine? I would have to imagine the answer is “yes” if you have been afflicted for thirty years, but if not ask about it.
If you eventually get on Febuxostat, please keep us apprised of your progress! I’m sure everyone would love to know first-hand details.

I HAVE BEEN SUFFERING WITH THE GOUT FOR THE LAST 6 YEARS. I COULD NOT TAKE ALLPURINOL OR COLCHICINE. THEY BOTH LEFT ME WITH A TERRIBLE EFFECT. I AM NOW ABLE TO HANDLE THE PAIN WITH A PRODUCT CALLED URINEX BUT STILL SUFFER WITH SEVERE PAIN WHEN I SKIP A PILL. I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH MY HEART AND AM TAKING NATURAL BLOOD THINNERS AND DIOGOXIN. I ALSO HAVE A THYROID CONDITION. I AM DESPERATE TO GET SOME HELP AND WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF BEBUXOSTAT MAY BE EFFECTIVE AT LOWERING MY HIGH URIC ACID .

I am in the TAP pharm clinical trial for Febuxostat. I have had GOUT for over a decade. When first diagnosed my UA was 13. Immediatley I was put on a diet of 4 ounces of animial or vegtable protein PER WEEK. After a year and a half of that my weight increased by 20 pounds and my UA was reduced to 12. My DOctor put my on Allopurinol, 300 mg per day. After 5 years my UA was reduced to the high 8’s. I entered the TMX67 (FEBUXOSTAT ORIGINAL STUDY NAME) for 1 year in the blind study I was on the Allopurinol and my UA continued in the 8’s. At the end of the Blind Study I was put on the FEBUXOSTAT 80mg within 3 months my US was reduced to the low 6’s. To remain in the study the UA had to be under 6. I was randomized to 120 MG a day and after 3 months my UA has been in the high 4’s for 3 years now. MY SERIOUS GOUT FLARES (siginifcant effect on my mobility) have been reduced from 3 to 4 per month to Less than 2 per year. FEBUXOSTAT IS A WONDERFUL DRUG FOR GOUT. I have not experienced any known side effects. My Blood workups have been within medical guidelines. Trigger foods for me are Peanuts, peanut Butter (gout flare within 2 days of eating), Beer & Popcorn, Scallops and Lobster.
Other than those trigger foods I eat normally, drink wine and alcohol (4-5 drinks a week), exercise and am trying to loose the weight that I gained on the no protein diet 9 years ago.
NAPROXIN takes care of any of my flares within 24 hours and I have only missed 2 days of work in the past year due to GOUT pain versus 2 to 3 per month on allopurinol.
Thank you TAP, Abbott Labs And Takeda Pharm.

I am a 53 yr old female, lost one kidney in a auto accident at 29, and have severe gout. i was on the clinical trial for two weeks, and actually saw a huge knot on my elbow disentigrate. i could not remain on the study because i am on pain medication at times( Ultram) I have taken colchine0.6 3 times daily for several years. nothing else helps. I am catch 22, because i am also diabetic. I eat little of anything, and have lost 85 lbs, and maintain my weight at 125 for 4 years. please release this drug. it is a lifesaver, because i have gout everywhere, and already had hand surgery, with not enough bone to replace a joint. and facing knee surgery to walk.please.
